turknorosirurji.org.tr / It is with great sadness that we share the passing on January 28 of Chun S. Chen, MD, a consummate neurosurgeon, neuroanatomist, and educator, who deeply cherished his position in the Department of Neurosurgery.
Dr. Chen was born in Taiwan and attended medical school and completed a neurosurgery residency at Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. After meeting him at a few international conferences, I fondly remember the day in 1992 that he arrived unannounced at Mount Sinai,
carrying a hand-written book based on Polaroid photographs of his exquisite anatomical dissections of the skull base. He joined the Department of Neurosurgery as a researcher where his work with Chandranath Sen, MD, and Kalmon D. Post, MD, evolved into a landmarkbook on skull-base anatomy. This propelled Dr. Chen to international fame as a leading anatomist and lecturer. He subsequently repeated a full neurosurgery residency at Mount Sinai and a skull base surgery fellowship before joining our full time faculty in 2006.
While continuing his worldwide lectures Dr. Chen's neurosurgery practice rapidly developed into one of the busiest in New York City. He was a tireless and compassionate physician and colleague who held Saturday office hours in Chinatown, and had many devoted patients in Queens and Manhattan. We will remember him as a dear friend and pillar of the neurosurgery community.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, February 8th at 10am at In 2 Church at 316 E. 91st Street in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Chun S. Chen Endowed Lecture Fund.
